Welcome to Upward Bound at Palo Verde College
Upward Bound is a Federal TRiO program funded by the U.S. Department of Education. The Upward Bound program at Palo Verde College provides academic instruction in Mathematics, Science, English, Composition, Literature, and Foreign Languages. Upward Bound provides fundamental support to participants in their preparation for entrance into post-secondary education. The program provides opportunities for participants to succeed in their high school performance and, ultimately, in their higher education pursuits. Upward Bound is designed to aid participants in transitioning and completing a post-secondary program of study after graduating high school.
Schools Served by Upward Bound at PVC
Currently, the program is funded to serve only students from the following three high schools:
- Palo Verde High School
- Twin Palms High School
- Riverside County Community School
Qualifications for Upward Bound at PVC
Students are accepted on a space availability basis. Once accepted, the student is expected to attend monthly Saturday Academies, attend the 6-week Summer Academy, and remain in the Upward Bound program through high school graduation. Student selection is based on the following criteria:
- Student is enrolled in one of the three above-mentioned schools.
- Student who is first-generation college student, or low income, or is at high risk for academic failure.
- Student has a desire to complete post-secondary education..

Program Structure of Upward Bound at PVC
The Upward Bound program consists of two components: the Academic Year and the Summer Session. Students are REQUIRED to attend both components each year as part of being in the Upward Bound program.
- The Academic Year Component Includes:
- Saturday Academies
- There are approximately ten Saturday Academies in the academic school year. Saturday Academies are typically four hours in length and consist of academic instruction, workshops, and tutoring.
- College Tours and Cultural Field Trips
- The Summer Session Component Includes:
- Summer Academy
- The Summer Academy is six-weeks, Monday through Thursday, four hours per day.
- The academy consists of academic courses in five core subjects, recreational activities, workshops, college tours, and cultural field trips.
- Students will spend one of the six weeks away from home visiting colleges and universities.
- At the end of the Summer, students leave with knowledge that contributes to their academic success and personal development.
