Jessica Soto, Instructor, GED Math Prep

"I was born and raised in Blythe on a farm as the eighth child and baby of Neil and Julie John. Some of my hobbies are tap dancing, playing the piano, boating on the Colorado River, camping in the desert, listening to political podcasts, and participating in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. After graduating from Palo Verde High School, I pursued and earned a Bachelor's degree in Math Education with a minor in Spanish at Brigham Young University. Before earning my degree, I deferred college to serve a church mission in Portugal Lisbon South and Cape Verde, West Africa speaking Portuguese. I returned to college after my mission and married my High School sweetheart, Richard "Cookie" Soto. After I graduated from college, I began teaching math at a High School in Provo, UT in English and Spanish. After my first child was born, I stopped teaching full-time in Utah and stayed home to raise my three children in Blythe. I returned to teaching math in 2018 in the GED program at Palo Verde College. It is very rewarding for me to help students progress to pass the math exam and earn their GED."

Lana Gitlin, Instructor, GED Language Prep

"I came to Palo Verde College with a background in teaching English as a Foreign Language, English for Academic Purposes, High School English, and Business English. Born in Seattle, Washington, and raised in Ann Arbor, Michigan, I did my bachelor's degree at Eastern Michigan University and my master's at the University of London's School of Oriental and African Studies. I earned my teaching qualifications from the International Teacher Training Institute (Hastings, England) and the University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate. I've also worked as a copy typist for the BBC World Service, writing instructor, copywriter, video editor, and news reporter for public radio.
I've spent most of my career overseas and I've lived and taught in Finland, France, England, Ireland, and Israel. Mohave Valley, Arizona, is now my "forever home." In Needles, California, I have the privilege of teaching Palo Verde students how to pass the GED Reasoning and Language Arts test. When not doing that, I work at home with private students worldwide. My hobbies include struggling mightily to learn how to play a particular musical instrument, and binge-watching series about spy rings, international drug cartels, and zombies.""
